Back to Blog Sad News

Our ape screwed up again.  She vowed to blog more often because a) we only blogged when sad things happened and b) we are awesome and c) obvis the world is craving more US. But she did not.  And then she could not bring herself to help us blog our really sad news.  So I (Ed) am going to help her stop up and do her job because we need to share our news--and we have good and bad news--and get back in the bloggy game!

The very, very sad news is that just before the new year we lost our heart and soul, Mr. Otis T. Potus.   He started feeling a bit poorly in mid-December and we learned he had prostate cancer (ma ape wants to blog about that later because she would like to share all the info she learned).  He got very poorly quickly and we had to say goodbye. Look at these handsome devils together!

I was especially sad because he was my best friend and I enjoyed accommodating his many requests for regular humpty dances.

Much to his delight!

I wanted to share with you what a very special guy he was.

OtP came to live with the sheppys in March of 2010 after their buddy Wally died.  You can read about his arrival here!  He had been a long-timer at the SPCA as a part of a cruelty investigation and had been there for almost 6 months when he was adopted in January of 2010 but then he was brought back on a day ma ape happened to stop by the SPCA and the rest is history! Here he is on his first day home when the sheppys were concerned ma ape had come home with a particularly stinky boar!

He was an older chap who had lived a harrrrd life but he didn't hold a grudge.  He never met a stranger, human or doggy, especially his FAVORITE brudder.

He was a busy dog with many hobbies that included gardening (eating hostas), being a gourmand (nomming everything, especially wallymelon), power nappping (snores not optional), and was an inveterate fashionista, singlehandedly redeeming the sweatervest from Rick Santorum (see above). And he was the best ambassadog for pitties he could possibly be.

He was a dog for the ages and we can't believe he wasn't even with us for 3 years.  It seemed like he was always here and it is hard to believe he is gone. We miss our favorite time together, relaxing coffee with milks on Sunday mornings.

We stopped blogging because we couldn't bear to say goodbye to our Otis but one of the best things about blogging is being able to have a record of our memories and share them with others.  And it is not fair of us to not share our magnificent selves with the Internets!  Otis would want us to carry on, just like he always did.  So vests on, tongues out, we have more blogging to do!

And more news.  Last month we lost our bestie Sophie. She was one of our first bloggy friends AND our only friend we met in real life!  We wanted to remember her and Otis together when he was a PERFECT GENTLEMAN.  *cough* Can you EVEN imagine such rude humping?  We like to think of you guys chillaxing with Mr. Wally.

Goodnight, sweet Otis and Sophie.

And next time we will have some happy news for you.  Preview:

DERP! Stay tuned...

Losing a Friend

We have not blogged in a very long time except on our tumblr and we wish we were not brought back by sad news. We were sad yesterday to learn that our friend Sam has crossed the Bridge.

Sam was one of our first blogging friends--she has her own tag on our bloggy!--and she was Wally's #1 girlfriend.  As you can see, they had a lot in common.

Plus, while neither of them was the biggest dog in their packs in body, they were still the biggest dogs in their pack, if you know what we mean.

Sam's person shared what Sam had for her last meal:  a 4-egg cheese omelet, 8 strips of turkey bacon, a chicken breast, several pieces of beef jerky, a heap of liver treats and an entire container of Cool Whip.  That's our girl! Never live life halfway!

Thanks for being our friend, Sam.  We miss you.

Terrible Mothers in History

Oscar Bean Super Teen here to deliver a history lesson about the Worst Mothers In the World.

Medea, who killed her children to get revenge on their father Jason.

Mommy Dearest.  She'd prefer you not use those wire hangers.

Gertrude, Hamlet's mama who killed his pops and got it on with his uncle all while Hamlet was going through his goth phase.

My ma ape (artist's rendering.)  Wednesday was my burpday and she 1) sent away my GranNE who I love more than anything 2) forgot my burpday until 3 p.m. 3) did not bake me a cake 4) did not shower me with gifts.

This is one sad sheppy!  The other dogs put together a short film for me.  At least someone loves me.

For Joe

Joe, we know you and Wally are expending a lot of energy humping all the big dogs.  Don't forget to stop and have one of these.

Yup, a bacon double-cheeseburger pizza.  Miss ya, big guy.  We know your brudder is a Doofus but we're sure he'll look after your peoples.

Goodbye 2010!

Last night we stayed up LATE to watch our Cornhuskers lose to the Huskies. Well, if they had to lose at least they lost to some dogs. (Apparently our ape went to their school. And she's still a bit thick, needs more clicker training.) It made us think that at this time last year we watched the SAME game (but the Huskers won), we were under 800 feet of snow, and we were getting ready to welcome in the new year with our Auntie Ira and Onkel Eric! How much has changed since then. We lost our Gramps and our Wally. These were not the best of times.

But we were found by....

One Otis.

And one Edgrr. And our ma ape got to meet so many of her DWB friends in July, she got to see our GranNE and our Onkel Eric for more than she has for the last decade combined, our bestie helped take care of us and still talks to us! So it was not our favorite year but it could have been worse. This year may we all make new friends, keep the old, and appreciate every minute with them!

And here's Wally's bit of advice for tackling the new year, there's no problem so big we can't...

HUMP IT!

Football Commentary

Our resident football experts are here to illustrate the stages of mourning after Nebraska's loss Saturday to They Who Shall Not Be Named.

Anger.

Resignation.
Despair.

So today we chewed on some Bevo Bones. It went a long way toward healing.

Sadness

We've had a happy week here with our new family member but we heard some very sad news today that our friends lost a family member. Tucker from The Brat Pack went to the bridge very unexpectedly. We will be thinking of his family

Goodnight, Dottie

We are sad to have to say goodbye to an old friend, Dottie, big sis to Dozer and Coop. She was a champion showdog AND a champion friend. You can say goodbye to her at their blog.

SPCA Saturday Returns! (Best of Times, Worst of Times Edition)

The Sheppys have offered to let me do SPCA Saturday because this week is especially relevant to me. This is my best contemplative look (please ignore slobber and wonky eye). It was 9 million degrees on Saturday so our ape and the dogs could not be out long but she met a couple of special fellows including JAMMIN' MUGS! Yes! That is his AWESOME name and he has a silly walk he does all the time where his hind end goes faster than the front and he winds up walking sideways. Hi-larious! Also, with his great name we are putting together a blues duo. Look for our album to drop next fall.

And this is Tiger, a substantial fellow!

And look at this bathing beauty! It's Rounder! Isn't he lovely on his three legs?

The missing leg doesn't slow him down one bit.

Doesn't slow his roll with the ladies.

And here's that lovely lady, Miss Dicey.

But here's what you wouldn't guess. These are my cousins of sorts. Time to bring the room down for a moment.

Dicey and Rounder, who are sweet as can be to peeps and dogs (almost as sweet as ME!), are part of 11 dogs brought to the SPCA after they were seized from a fighting ring run by two brudders. One of the brudders was the dude that I was taken away from. These sweetums were probably the bait dogs (how my bud here lost his leg) and I was with the breeding dogs. They have not found the fighting rings or dogs. In other words, getting busted once for dogfighting did nothing to stop this dude. Sigh. OK, can't end this on a sad note. The dogs the SPCA saved are doing great and can be adopterated out. And also:

DOGS RULE!

Memories

Our Gramps said this was one of his favorite quotes and it is one of ours, too, because it reminds us of our brudder:

Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these.

Good night to an Angel

We lost a good friend today. Angel was a neglect case at the SPCA with arthritis so severe she could barely walk and she would probably have been put down but our friends took her in and gave her all her old heart desired and even though she couldn't run or sometimes even walk, she demanded respect from all the whippersnappers.

We can still hear your wroo wroos, Angel.

Hi Peeps!

Our ma ape has been back for a WHOLE WEEK and has not helped us blog because she is busy which in naked ape language means LAZY. We were super good while she was gone and got visits every day from our bestie from Tracing Lucky Skies (bestie ape, anyway.) That was the most fun ever but then our buzzkill ape came back. She has been planting, planting planting in the yard and trying to do "work" so she can go back to Nebraska to see Gramps. We're pretty sure that what Gramps and GranNE nees is a little visit from us but the ma ape doesn't seem to agree. We will try to take some new pictures including Otis's new grill, ma ape's garden (now with Wallymelons!), cornish hens for breakfast!, Ethel's burpday!, and much much more!

A Little Hiatus

Hi guys. A lot has happened. Our ape went away and came back (no volcano here!). Ethel went to the vet and came back (minor liver zyme irregularity). Our buddy Sophie Brador is having some health probs. Otis had FIVE root canals/tooth extractions. But right now we are just worried about our gramps who is poorly. For awhile we may not be around much because our paws are busy doing the power of the paw for him. If you can spare a paw, please do a little power of the paw for our gramps, too.

And because we need some comic relief, here is Otis being a total Doofus. He can even do that thing like Tanner where his eyes point in different directions:

He looks like Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein.

And here we are definitely NOT being doofuses:

And most definitely we did not make out with stinky breath Otis.

We'll see you in a bit.
