The Name Game

The Dogs of Jackman Ave had a great post about how they got their names. It seemed like a good idea and I've had several inquiries about how we got our names so here's the stories of How We Got Our Lovely Names.

This is Ethel.

At the shelter she was called "Dallas" which neither of my apes especially liked and which she didn't really respond to anyway. And, since the Dallas Cowboys are the mortal enemy of our closest football franchise (go Eagles!) we decided she needed a change. Ethel is the name of a famous comedic sidekick--Ethel from I Love Lucy. This makes me Lucy, I suppose.

This is another famous Ethel--Ethel Merman. She sang show tunes and provides great inspiration to drag queens everywhere (No comment!).

Mostly, though, my apes just liked the way "Ethel" sounded, especially when paired with Wally.

And speaking of Wally, here I am!

I came with my name! The rescue I came from decided I was a Wally and I'd had the name for about four months (no one wanted me for that long--can you believe it!). It's fitting because I resemble the creature who has a similar name--the walrus! My ma ape has always been a huge fan of seals, sea lions, and walruses (walrii?) so it's a nice fit.

To clarify, neither Wally nor the Walrus have anything to do with THIS creature whom we believe is trying to pass as a walrus to hide his inner malignant nature.

My dad says that guy is a douche bag - whatever that means!
I got my name because my original name was Chance (WTF!)and then rescue called me Pepper Jack (WTF!) but I responded to Jack so my mom and dad went with Ike (my dad wanted Zeke but my mom said no way.)

We love Wally & we love Ethel. Our Mom has a fondness for "little old people names"...I was almost Mabel!! She says my next brother will be a Walter or Howard or Stanley or Edgar.

Thanks for sharing your stories...I don't think I'm a Mabel, or Spot or Beyonce! I am Lola...hear me ROAR!

Texas was the name my awesome RSPCA people gave me when they took me in off the street. I was so thankful to them I was glad to be called anything, but Texas really stuck because my hoomans loved the name. They say everything is big in Texas and I am a dog with big strength, a big heart and a big appetite!

Love and Licks,
Texas (and his humans).

I was named after the song Jackson, (performed by Nancy & Lee or Johnny & June). It's not a very happy song but it also sounds similar to the WFT that J1 had before me. He was called Watson. I like Ethel & Wally. They kind of go together, don't they? J x

I think Wally is a very noble name, it may be a shortened form of Wallace, who is a Scottish hero, Braveheart!

Och Aye The Noo, to Wally!

Hi Wally...
You really look like a Wally. Which is good. I got my name from a song (at least that is what my mom said) which I guess is ok.

Lots of Licks, Ruby

I like Wally...and I like the comparisons that you've done...you know they say that hoomans start looking like us after awhile...not sure how mom would look like me...maybe if she starts getting more (oooppps) SOME grey in her hair maybe she could start looking like me eventually (well a long long time from now) haha!

Hugs from Billy Boo:)

Hmmm... this might be unique to this side of the puddle, but:

"wally Noun. 1. An idiot or imbecile. Prolific use during the early 1980s. {Informal}
2. A pickled cucumber, a gherkin. "

(thats from http://www.peevish.co.uk/slang/w.htm)

Sniffs etc
Tealeaf

("tealeaf Noun. Thief. Cockney rhyming slang. ")
